I grew up in the countryside and became used to physical work at an early age. I worked in the Whaling Station in Hvalfjordur for 7 summer seasons and during winters I worked at sea as a deckhand on various fishing vessels and trawlers.

I learned Wire and Rope Splicing (Ships Rigging) and worked in this specialist trade for several years. I drove Taxis for a few years and I got my Amateur licence in 1984. I worked for a while at the TFA and TFT Coast Stations – Ship to Shore service as a radio operator and I served as a Field Service Officer with the UN from 1991 to 2003.

I joined the UN Field Service as a Radio Officer, and I performed Rigging duties as well which resulted in me becoming a Radio Technician. I worked in this field on HF, VHF and on Microwave systems planning and installations.

I served in South Lebanon, Former Yugoslavia, the Republic of Abkhazia and in East Timor.

I experienced more than my share of shootings and artillery fire.

I saw the World and it shot at me.   I have high frequency hearing loss with the result that I find that I like to copy CW at a very low pitch – 300Hz or less.

In East Timor, while on assignment in the Enclave of Oecussi, I suffered heat exhaustion followed by a tropical illness, most likely Dengue Fever or possibly Malaria, which resulted in permanent heart damage (Bundle Branch Block and dilated cardiomyopathy).

rhombic

I was in a coma for three days and as it turned out, I survived the illness although it left me very weak. I have still not recovered and may never recover fully.

I suffered a MI (Heart Attack) a week after I returned to Iceland and the doctors put me on Sick-Leave.
I have subsequently retired from the UN for health reasons.

I have moved to a remote area of Iceland, where I hope to recharge my batteries with hard physical work and fresh air.  As a property owner I have declared my independence from metropolitan chaos and escaped to a quiet, secluded, enriched life.

I am licking my wounds in the back woods so to speak, attempting to forget my time in the UN.

I am planting a forest on my farm and we have already planted more than 40,000 saplings. The ten year plan calls for 300,000 saplings to be planted in 110 hektares of land. My farm is 1500 hektares of land, comprised of a valley with a small river down the middle and the mountains on each side.

I have built several Rhombic antennas – Arctic Diamonds – and I enjoy these legendary antennas very much. The location is very quiet and I can literally hear a pin drop on the far end of the world.

I am able to fire my antennas out of the valley by careful siting of the antennas and by using long lines of open wire feeders which have very low losses.

Your Antennas, ‘Impressive effort!! You are to be commended for this great antenna installation. How did you acquire all the wire and poles? We worked about a year ago on 40M and it was by looking up your info on QRZ.com that I found your web site. Wonderful news about the sea eagle too.

Its nice to read your policy and applaud your stand to wipe out the list lizards, and the like. I have not been able to contact Don for some months and hope to visit him this summer. best regards, Joe’,

Thor, I read your Stew Perry posting and was feeling bad for you. Apparently, your antennas are working, in fact, very well. The angles may be too low for some of the propagation, hense the good results from other TF stations. You may want to investigate other antennas for higher angle conditions.

If you would like to discuss some possible options, pse contact me.
    73 es HNY, Super job!

    160m CW,
We all appreciate your great effort to work JAs on the top band. I finally worked TF on 160m after several try. It is real good one to me.
It is quite interesting that we could hear how our signals were heard in Iceland. You are really lucky living in the area absolutely noiseless!
Try to work JAs and Asian stations on 160m and 80m. I know many JAs want to work TF stations not only 160m but 80m.
    God bless you.

    Truly amazing…,
I was looking for the presentation you gave at the CCF cruise, but couldn’t find it on your site.
Your antennas should go on the UNESCO World Heritage List ;) 73,Jonas/SM5PHU

    Hi Thor,

I live in an apartment near Boston, MA and recently came into possession of an old National NC-300 receiver (US made, ca. 1956). Due to the construction of my building, HF doesn’t penetrate the walls so I pushed some magnet wire out of my kitchen window in an attempt to pick up any sort of signal. Still mostly deaf, I left the receiver on while checking email and heard “TF4M” on 40m CW. In disbelief, I googled the call and found your site describing your antenna installation–what an amazing feat! Wishing you the best of health and wonderful times operating (and continuing to build) your enviable station. VY 73, Chris KA8WFC/1
